Bentonite and coal became the primary items hauled until 1991 when the C&NW filed an application to abandon the line. The old depot (most likely the one in this picture) was bought at auction and was torn down in January 1969. Passenger service was eliminated in 1958. In 1954 C&NW reported that they wished to discontinue passenger service.

In 1943 the tracks to the old mill were removed. For decades it was the primary way to ship livestock, transport grain, gas, oil, lumber, coal and passengers. Gilman Minnechaduza Mill to load flour from the mill and ice harvested from Minnechaduza Lake. It also had a spur connecting it to the S.F. He retired in 1947 after 36 years in Valentine and 52 years with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. He lived with his family in quarters above the passenger depot. John O’Rourke was a long time station master. This is in the area where the City of Valentine Cowboy Trailhead Park is currently located. Fun facts: The railroad reached Valentine in spring of 1883.
